Zozibini Tunzi, the new Miss Universe, made a powerful statement when she came out victorious at the competition while wearing her natural hair. This move made her a source of inspiration and a standard of beauty that Black women with natural hair can follow. However, things could have been different.
She revealed that she received advice and pleas from her family, friends and colleagues to wear a wig during the competition. She stated that most of the people closest to her kept insisting that she should not compete for Miss Universe with her natural curls.

However, she stood her ground and decided to compete at the pageant without changing her hair as it has been in that state for up to three years now.
This historic action has helped the natural hair movement make great strides in the world of beauty. It can be said that Tunzi’s belief in the beauty of her natural curls has produced a lot of positive effects for the Black community as a whole.
After she was crowned as the new queen, Tunzi posted an encouraging message for women on her social media page. She wrote, “Tonight a door was opened and I could not be more grateful to have been the one to have walked through it. May every little girl who witnessed this moment forever believe in the power of her dreams and may they see their faces reflected in mine.”
