His diamond-encrusted gold ring, which was designed for him after signing with Death Row Records, has sold for a record-breaking $1 million during an auction by Sotheby’s in New York.

The gold circlet studded with a cabochon ruby and two pavé-cut diamonds is inscribed with “Pac & Dada 1996,” referencing his engagement to actress and model Kidada Jones, daughter of record producer Quincy Jones. The ring symbolizes Tupac’s survival of a tumultuous time in his life, after spending eight months in jail and his engagement to his beloved.
According to his godmother, Yaasmyn Fulat, who helped him design the ring modeled after the crowns of Europe’s medieval kings, the piece represents an “act of self-coronation.” Tupac wore the jewelry for several months and was last seen with it in 1996 during the Video Music Awards (VMAs).
The ring is now the “most valuable hip-hop artifact ever sold at [an] auction”, as reported by the bidding house, surpassing Sotheby’s estimate by more than three times during the themed sale. The sale reflects the continued influence and appreciation of Tupac, not just as an artist, but as a cultural icon.
De La Soul’s Kelvin Mercer, a guest curator for the sale, expressed his appreciation for the ring, reflecting that it represents Tupac in a personal moment away from the public eye, expressing his love for another person. Mercer stated, “What’s so special about this ring is that it shows him in a moment where he was not necessarily on the front lines as an artist, but just a man expressing his love for another person, and that’s beautiful to see.”
