    The story “The Village That Vanished” highlights traditional folk tales, stories about historical events through the eyes of young children, and contemporary portraits of kids exploring their world. Featured countries include Eritrea, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Zambia, and Somalia. The story which is written by Ann Grifalconi, is a thrilling tale of survival and bravery in the face of danger. Set in the jungle, the young Abekenile and the rest of her tribe, the villagers of Yao find themselves in grave danger at the hands of slavers. Despite their best efforts, it seems that they are powerless to stop these ruthless intruders, leaving them with no choice but to retreat into the safety of the forest.

    In “The Village That Vanished,” we are introduced to the young heroine Abekenile, who lives in a small village hidden deep within the jungle. Despite feeling safe and sheltered within their jungle home, the villagers soon learn that a band of slavers is on its way, threatening to disrupt their peaceful existence. Abekenile’s mother, comes up with a clever plan to fool the slavers, and a tribal elder, stays behind to face the slavers, steadfast in her trust that the ancestor-spirits will watch over her. But it is Abekenile herself who finds that she has the courage and cunning needed to come up with a plan to save her people.
