Rear Adm. Zeita Merchant is not just making history as the first African American woman to achieve the rank of admiral in the Coast Guard. She is also setting an example of exceptional leadership, unwavering dedication, and commitment to maritime safety and community outreach.

According to the United States Coast Guard, her journey started when she discovered the Minority Officer Recruitment Effort scholarship program, which led her to a fulfilling career in the Coast Guard. Over her 26 years of service, Merchant has held various assignments, including commanding the Marine Safety Unit in Chicago and Sector New York, where she was the first African American woman to command that unit.

Merchant’s recent achievements include successfully leading responses to complex maritime incidents, advancing diversity and inclusion goals, and achieving the highest utilization rate of Coast Guard Cyber Protection Teams. She has also been a role model for women and minorities in the field, paving the way for others to follow in her footsteps.

In an interview with the United States Coast Guard, Merchant reflected on her journey, stating “I see it as a road less traveled, filled with unique challenges and unparalleled opportunities.” These choices, often difficult, have shaped not only her career but also her vision of leadership, one that fosters resiliency, promotes inclusivity, and values integrity above all.

Merchant’s career has been nothing short of impressive. As she takes on her new role as the commander of U.S. Coast Guard Personnel Service Center in Washington D.C., Merchant’s leadership, vision, and dedication will continue to inspire and motivate generations to come.
