Michael Jordan is still making headlines and breaking records even after retiring from basketball. This time it’s not his slam dunks or his championship titles, it’s a photo of his first game with the Chicago Bulls selling for a whopping $140K. That’s some serious cash for a snapshot, but hey, when you’re the GOAT, nothing seems too expensive to own a piece of history.
The lucky buyer didn’t just get the photograph, they also got their hands on some Jordan memorabilia, including his junior and senior yearbooks from high school. And how much did they spend? $141,954. That’s a whole lot of cash for a yearbook and a photograph. But hey, if you have the money and you’re a die-hard Jordan fan, I say go for it.
Michael Jordan’s Game 2 sneakers worn during the Bulls’ 1998 playoff run, commonly referred to as “The Last Dance,” and the inspiration behind the hit Netflix series of the same name, at a record-breaking sale of $2.24 million according to Sotheby’s who oversaw the auction
And this isn’t the first time Jordan has made a fortune in auction. Remember that 1992 Dream Team Jacket he wore and later gifted to an NBA employee? Yeah, that one sold for a cool $1.5 million. It’s safe to say that anything associated with the GOAT is worth its weight in gold.
In fact, Sotheby’s head of streetwear and modern collectibles, Brahm Wachter, had this to say about the Dream Team Jacket: “To be able to sell this relic from such a historic world event — one that is often credited for multiplying the popularity and global reach of basketball — is both rare and unparalleled.” And in a press release prior to the sales of the sneakers Brahm Wachter said “Michael Jordan game-worn sports memorabilia has proven time and time again to be the most elite and coveted items on the market,”
So there you have it, folks. Michael Jordan may have retired from basketball, but his legacy lives on in auction houses too. And let’s be real, if we had the money, we’d all be bidding on a piece of history too.
