Innoson Motors is an automobile and bus manufacturing company in Nigeria and sells to other Africa Nations. Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Co. Ltd., shortened as IVM, was founded by Innocent Chukwuma in 2007 and runs a plant in Nnewi in the state of Anambra. Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing is nicknamed Pride Of African Road.
Innoson Motors is the first indigenous vehicle manufacturing plant in Nigeria, and it has been playing a pivotal role in the country’s automotive industry since it started operations after it was opened by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2010. Innoson Motors is a privately owned Nigerian company headquartered in Nnewi, Anambra State. The company makes bicycles, motorcycles, tricycles, buses, cars, mini-buses, refuse disposal vehicles, and even trucks and tippers at full capacity.
The idea to start a vehicle manufacturing company in Nigeria was born out of a desire to see Nigerians driving new cars according to Innocent Chukwuma “The inspiration to go into vehicle manufacturing was drawn from a desire to see Nigerians drive new cars, because “Nigeria has become a dumping ground for second-hand cars”.

There are currently very few new car dealerships in the country, and most Nigerians have to purchase second-hand vehicles. This means that many people are driving around in old, unreliable cars. The goal is to provide Nigerians with new, affordable cars that will help to improve the quality of life for everyone. So far, the response has been overwhelmingly positive and there is a lot of excitement about the new venture. In the coming years, it is hoped that more and more Nigerians will be able to enjoy the benefits of owning a new car.
Innoson Motors has a plant capacity of up to 10,000 vehicles per year. The company started with a small factory making motorbikes but later moved into car production after acquiring a larger factory. Innoson’s product range includes the IVM Grand 100 motorcycle, the IVM G40 and G80ld cars, and the IVM Nera sedan. The company plans to start exporting its vehicles to other countries in Africa and beyond. Innoson Motors is currently the only indigenous vehicle manufacturer in Nigeria and one of the few in Africa.
According to the General Manager of the company, Jude Onusogu, buying Innoson products is as good as buying Japanese products, with Mitsubishi engine or some America products. “It is not purely a local technology yet, as the engine of the vehicles are imported from places like Japan and America. It has all the advantages of made-in-Japan vehicles like fuel efficiency. Yet the vehicles were built for Nigerian roads.”
The company has come a long way and today, the company is a major force in the Nigerian automotive industry, and it is well on its way to becoming a global player.
