Robyn Roberts, a 63-year-old grandmother of 33 and great-grandmother of 12, has recently earned her degree in business administration from Southern New Hampshire University. Roberts had taken up the challenge put forth by her grandson, who had challenged her to complete her education alongside him. With a friendly competition between the two, she had emerged victorious with a higher GPA. Roberts expressed her elation to the University and shared with Good Morning America about her long-awaited accomplishment, saying, “I have finished something I started that is absolutely amazing, and I feel amazing.”

Roberts, who runs a trucking business dealing with hazardous materials and government equipment alongside her husband, faced unique challenges in pursuing her education. With her busy schedule, she had little time to attend classes. However, she credits SNHU for accommodating her studies despite her circumstances. She had spent 90% of her studies inside her semi-truck, working on assignments during her travels at rest areas.

Plans of higher education are still in place as Roberts has expressed her interest in pursuing law school. Her ultimate goal is to provide support to survivors of abuse. She also shared her optimistic outlook, saying, “64 is the year of new beginnings. If all goes well, by the time I turn 67, I’ll be a lawyer.”

Despite her busy schedule, Roberts made a pit stop before her graduation ceremony to visit Dover, Delaware, and has plans to visit New York and Arkansas before returning to her hometown of Las Vegas. Her multitasking skills are not limited to her academic pursuits, as she will be hosting a Thanksgiving dinner for 38 people upon her return.

Robyn Roberts’ inspiring story embodies the Akan of Ghana saying “it is the dark pot that cooks the best stew”. This proverb speaks to the idea that adversity can be a source of strength and resilience, and that the greatest trials can produce the most extraordinary outcomes. In many ways, Robyn Roberts proves this ethos, demonstrating that the challenges of balancing work, family, and education can ultimately lead to personal growth and fulfilment.
