After 31 years, Coming 2 America returns, the American romantic comedy film that serves as a sequel to Coming to America (1988). The film will be directed by Craig Brewer, from a screenplay by David Sheffield, Barry W. Blaustein, and Kenya Barris, based on characters created by Eddie Murphy.

Coming to America (1988) was an 80s classic romantic comedy which featured Prince Akeem Joffer (Eddie Murphy) as the prince of a wealthy African country Zamunda who grows weary of his pampered lifestyle on his 21st birthday and wishes to do more for himself. When his parents, King Jaffe and Queen Aeoleon, present him with an arranged bride-to-be, Akeem takes action. Seeking an independent woman who will sincerely love him in spite of his royal status.

To escape an arranged marriage, Akeem flees to America accompanied by his fussy best friend/personal aide, Semmi (Arsenio Hall), to find his queen. They land in New York City borough of Queens and rent a squalid tenement in the neighborhood of Long Island City under the guise of poor foreign students.

He disguised as a foreign student working in a fast-food restaurant where he and Lisa (Shari Headley) fell in love but he struggles with revealing his true identity to her. On the other hand, he struggles to reveal his marriage intentions to his king father (James Earl Jones) who wanted his return to a pending wedding arrangement.

Coming 2 America will feature some of the previous characters. The film stars Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Jermaine Fowler, Leslie Jones, Shari Headley, John Amos, Tracy Morgan, Wesley Snipes, and James Earl Jones and scheduled to be released on December 18, 2020.

Set in the follow-up of the events of the first film, former Prince Akeem Joffer (Eddie Murphy) is set to become King of Zamunda when he discovers he has a son he never knew about in America – a street-savvy Queens native named Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler). Honoring his royal father’s (James Earl Jones) dying wish to groom this son as the crowned prince, Akeem and Semmi (Arsenio Hall) set off to America once again.

On January 11, 2019, it was announced that the sequel will be moving forward with Murphy reprising his role, and Craig Brewer as director (having previously worked with Murphy on the Netflix film Dolemite Is My Name). Arsenio Hall, Shari Headley, John Amos, Paul Bates, and James Earl Jones are expected to return for the sequel as well.

Remember these lines “McDowell’s. See, they’re McDonald’s. I’m McDowell’s. They got the Golden Arches, mine is the Golden Arcs. They got the Big Mac, I got the Big Mick. We both got two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, and onions, but their buns have sesame seeds. My buns have no seeds”.

The wife of the king in the 80s “Coming to Ameria” movie was the actress Madge Sinclair, who played the majestic and elegant Queen Aoleon. Sinclair also voiced Queen Sarabi in the original Lion King opposite James Earl Jones’s Mufasa. Sadly, Madge Sinclair died at the age of 57 in 1995 about 7 years after “Coming to America” movie after battling leukemia.

Murphy has held the title of one of the kings of comedy in Hollywood, following his major role in Coming to America.
