Christopher Ballinger is making history at just 17 years old. After being selected out of thousands of applicants to participate in the Air Force JROTC Flight Academy Program, he has achieved a dream that many pilots can only dream of: becoming one of the nation’s youngest Black pilots!
In an interview with ABC 7, he said “I have had this interest for a while…this was something that was calling for me.” As the D.C. native head into his senior year of high school and dreams of joining the Air Force Academy, let’s take a closer look at what makes him such an exemplary role model for aspiring Black pilots.
The young pilot began to express interest in becoming a pilot as far back as elementary school. Through his involvement with the Air Force JROTC program at Sidwell Friends School, he applied and was accepted into their 8-week summer flight academy program.
For 8 weeks, he trained with other cadets from across the nation and graduated from the program with flying colors! He also took away many skills such as discipline, leadership and respect – all essential qualities for any successful pilot.
He is now well on his way to achieving his dream of becoming a military pilot after graduating from high school. He hopes to join the Air Force Academy and take on roles that will help him gain experience flying military planes. Although there are undoubtedly challenges ahead in pursuing this career path, Christopher has already proven himself capable and determined by completing an intensive program at such a young age!
