Basketball superstar A’ja Wilson has a bronze statue of her likeness in her honour by the University of South Carolina campus produced by The Fine Art Studio of Rotblatt Amrany. Wilson, who has won numerous awards for her on-court abilities, also became a vocal advocate for social justice in 2020.
The statue is a permanent tribute to her achievements and status as one of the few women athletes in the United States to be immortalized in this way.
It’s no secret that Black women in sports have been breaking down barriers and shattering glass ceilings for decades. From track stars like Wilma Rudolph to tennis icons like Serena Williams.
Steps are now been taking to highlight and honour Black women in sports as a way to recognize their achievements, combat systemic issues of representation and opportunity that has been deliberated on for many decades.
