The continuous domination of the music airwave all over the world by Afrobeat has not relented. A concept that developed in the 1960s and 1970s was influenced by Fuji music and Highlife mixed with American Jazz and Funk.
I can recollect in 2010 when I danced to Wizkid’s song blasting in one of London’s Night Clubs, the dance floor was electric and both Londoners and everyone in the club was so excited that I asked myself if I was in Nigeria or the UK. Things have not changed since then, more and more arts have come to reiterate the old saying that Music originated from Africa, and it’s a good time that Afro Music has decided to take over the stage.
As exemplified by the King of Afrobeat; Fela Kuti and followed by Tubaba, P Square, Wizkid, Davido, Yemi Alade, Tekno, Burna Boy, Tiwa Sage, Flavour, and a host of others, Afrobeat has become the new music to reckon with especially as more and more collaborations spring up among African Giants worldwide.
Afrobeat’s influence on the world’s music has continued on many fronts; the Wizkid and Drake’s Come Closer released in 2017 sent a huge wave to the music world followed by Davido and Chris Brown’s Blow My Mind although they were not the first to collaborate in such manner, their music trend in the world music stage to kick off African Giant Collaborations. Beyonce’s Black Is King was recently the talk of the DJs all over the world featuring a host of Artists from Africa such as Yemi Alade, Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, Tekno, and a host of others. The R&B queen Ashanti did a collaboration with Willie XO in their song titled Early In The Morning.
There have also been collaborations within Africa such as Yemi Alade and Angelique Kidjo in Shekere as well as others bringing the African vibe together under one roof.
The collaboration of Afro artists all over the world has been predicted to take a new turn as more and more music lovers opt for the music with Afro flare, this has led Africa Giant followers to predict such collaborations that would add more flavour to the already celebrated win for Afrobeat. According to Jane from London, who made a comment on social media suggesting a collaboration between Tekno and Jay z; she believes such would bring out one of the best the music industry has seen.
