Over his long and illustrious career as a leading student activist and political leader, Adewale Adeyemo gained a reputation as a passionate voice for unity and healing in the aftermath of tragic events. This was perhaps best exemplified by Adeyemo’s legendary speech at the memorial service for the victims of September 11th, 2001, when he urged his fellow students to come together in strength and support rather than succumbing to fear and division.

Adeyemo continued to be a prominent figure in political discourse, becoming closely involved with the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal. However, despite Adeyemo’s strong advocacy for the deal, it drew criticism from members of both the Democratic and Republican parties. Ultimately, Adeyemo’s powerful vision did not prevail, as President Donald Trump withdrew the US from this agreement over concerns that it is bad for U.S. workers, moves American jobs abroad, decline in manufacturing, lower wages, and increase inequality. The current U.S. President Joe Biden stated in 2021 that he does not support rejoining the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
