As an award-winning African American actress who has been captivating audiences for decades, Angela Bassett has become a true icon in Hollywood. Her incredible talent and range have earned her countless accolades, including Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations, while her remarkable achievements have cemented her position as a role model, not only for Black people but for women in Hollywood.

Bassett’s impressive career began onstage in the mid-1980s, where her performances in August Wilson’s plays, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, showcased her talent and versatility. In 1991, she played a small but powerful role in John Singleton’s Boyz n the Hood, followed by her biggest role yet, starring opposite Denzel Washington in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X.

However, it was her portrayal of singer Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do with It that earned Bassett critical and popular acclaim. Her incredible performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress and a Golden Globe win for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. It was here that Bassett truly established herself as a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood.

From there, she continued to shine in a number of roles, including in romantic dramedies Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back, and as the mother of Christopher Wallace in the biography Notorious. She has also made her mark on television, with recurring roles on series such as Alias and ER, and her work on the popular anthology series American Horror Story.

But it is her portrayal of Queen Ramonda in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Panther that has truly cemented her legacy in Hollywood. Her performance in the groundbreaking film has been praised for breaking down barriers and shattering stereotypes, making her a true role model for young Black women everywhere.

But beyond her incredible talent and range, Bassett’s dedication to her craft and her advocacy for Black women in the industry have made her a true force for change. Her impressive accomplishments have earned her six honorary doctorates, while her work as an executive producer on the hit series 9-1-1 and its spin-off, 9-1-1: Lone Star, has opened up new doors for women of color in Hollywood.

All in all, Angela Bassett’s remarkable achievements have earned her a place among the most talented and inspiring actresses in the industry. As Hollywood continues to evolve and change, she is sure to remain a beacon of hope and inspiration for generations of actors to come.
