It’s time to celebrate and raise a glass of champagne to Chika Oriuwa, who made history in 2020 as the valedictorian of the University of Toronto’s faculty of medicine! Can you believe it? This amazing Nigerian-born Canadian student achieved what many could only dream of – being the top of her class and giving the farewell speech at her graduation ceremony!

But wait, there’s more! Oriuwa is not just any ordinary student, she is a trailblazer. When she started medical school, she was the only Black person in a class of 259 students. That’s right, the only one! Talk about standing out in a sea of white coats and stethoscopes.

Despite facing adversity and discriminatory comments, Oriuwa remained focused and determined. She even spent her four years advocating for others, giving speeches, and mentoring fellow students. Oriuwa is not just a high-achieving student, she is a true inspiration to the Black community.

In fact, Oriuwa’s success has paved the way for more opportunities for other Black students in the University of Toronto’s faculty of medicine. For the class of 2024, 24 black medical students were admitted – the largest group in Canadian history! Now that’s progress.
