Danielle Boadu, a talented nine-year-old from the Heritage Park Primary School in Peterborough, England, emerged as the winner of the prestigious “Sum It Up” Math Competition in 2022, which brought together primary school children across the UK and Ireland to mark World Maths Day. Boadu beat over 450 students in the Year 3-4 category to clinch the coveted title, which was organized by Renaissance Learning, a leading ed-tech provider.

The competition aimed to inspire children to think creatively and imaginatively about maths and how it can be experienced in everyday life. Participants were encouraged to create artwork that showcases their vision of where maths can be found and experienced.

Boadu’s winning entry wowed the judges with its inventive and inspiring ideas. Her unique visual interpretation of maths in her school playground used nature to represent addition, shapes, and parallel lines. Judge Catherine Magee, Teacher of the Year in a Primary School Silver Winner, noted that Boadu demonstrated impressive skills in counting and observing objects in her playground while using maths concepts to identify patterns and shapes.

Nina Edenbrow, added: “I’m so pleased for Danielle. She made some fantastic mathematical observations and recorded her findings very carefully. We examined our school environment and it was fascinating for the children to see the maths in nature.”

It is worth mentioning that the ‘Sum It Up’ Math Competition was open to all primary school children in the UK and Ireland. The creativity and artistic talent displayed by the young participants were awe-inspiring, with their artwork featuring maths represented through a wide range of interests, including horse boxes, football pitches, gardens, supermarkets, and even superheroes.

Finally, it is noteworthy to add that the accomplishment of Boadu is a testament to the fact that there are many intelligent young minds from Africa who have the potential to excel in mathematics and other fields. This competition and similar initiatives can help to nurture and encourage their talent while building their confidence in handling complex mathematical problems.
