For many Nigerians, access to electricity is a luxury, and a majority rely on generators to run their homes. However, thanks to the innovative mind of Dozie Igweilo, a Lagos-based entrepreneur, there is a glimmer of hope. Through his company QuadLoop, Igweilo is changing the game by creating solar-powered lanterns made from electronic waste, targeting rural areas with limited access to electricity. Let’s dive deeper into how he is helping families accomplish daily tasks after the sun goes down by creating affordable and sustainable lighting solutions.

Igweilo’s path towards creating QuadLoop’s first product, Idunnu, was not without challenges. Despite having a degree in economics, he was always drawn to electronics and engineering, which is what paved the way for QuadLoop. His passion for addressing Nigeria’s electricity problem stems from his own experiences, growing up in a community that was consistently plagued by blackouts. In 2020, he received funding support from the Nigerian Climate Innovation Centre (NCIC), which enabled him to start a full business operation.

Idunnu, QuadLoop’s first product, is a rechargeable lantern that comes equipped with batteries and frames. It is affordably priced at around $50 per unit and provides a long-term, sustainable solution for households that rely on generators. The product’s name, Idunnu, means “joy” in the Yoruba language, reflecting the company’s commitment to providing light, hope, and happiness for Nigerians who struggle to access electricity.

Using electronic waste as a material to produce these lanterns is not only a creative solution to tackle Nigeria’s e-waste problem, but it also promotes sustainability. By repurposing discarded electronics, QuadLoop is reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, which will inevitably contribute to cleaner air and water for Nigeria. This demonstrates that it’s not just about selling products; it’s about providing sustainable solutions that are made to last.

Dozie Igweilo has shown us that sustainable solutions are not just an option, but a necessity. He has not only created a product that provides affordable and reliable lighting to millions of Nigerians but has also tackled the country’s e-waste problem. We need more entrepreneurs like Igweilo who are ready to roll up their sleeves and tackle the problems that matter. With QuadLoop, those affected by the electricity issues can dare to dream of a brighter future where access to electricity is not a luxury but a right.
