Yekemi Otaru is making waves abroad, in more ways than one. Hailing from Nigeria and making a name for herself as an academic, she has now stood out as the chancellor-elect of the University of the West of Scotland (UWS).

According to information from the University of the West Scotland in its “Media Release”, as chancellor, Ms Otaru will hold formal powers to confer degrees, diplomas and other academic distinctions, and will represent the university at key events as an advocate and dignitary.

Otaru’s academic career began in her native Nigeria, where she earned four degrees. She also obtained degrees in Chemical Engineering from UNIBEN and an MBA. It was clear from the outset that Yekemi had an inquisitive mind and a thirst for knowledge that could not be quenched. Her drive and determination have been the key to her outstanding success.

After leaving Nigeria, Otaru’s academic pursuits took her to Scotland, where she continued her studies at the American British Academy (ABA). It is here that she honed her skills in petroleum engineering, technical sales, and strategic marketing roles. Since then, she has had a successful career, holding several positions within the UWS system, including senior engineering and marketing roles in four international technology companies, including Lloyds Register and Schlumberger.

Yekemi also has a keen eye for business and has worked with start-ups, SMEs, and large corporate organizations in the Software, IT, Engineering, Business Support, Recruitment, and Oil & Gas sectors. She ran her own marketing consultancy for nearly three years and served over 20 clients during that time. Her track record and expertise in business support translate directly into her current role in Interface, a public sector-backed establishment helping Scottish businesses work more closely with academic institutions to drive innovative projects.

While her career achievements are many, it is her dedication to supporting girls in STEM that is particularly noteworthy. Yekemi is passionate about mentoring business owners in the poorest countries, photography, and creative writing, but her passion for inspiring young girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics is what sets her apart from others.

Yekemi’s appointment as the chancellor-elect of the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) is a testament to her immense personal and professional achievements. As chancellor, Ms. Otaru will have the power to confer degrees, diplomas, and academic distinctions, as well as representing the university at key events as an advocate and dignitary. She is certainly poised to make a significant contribution to the institution.
