Tobi Amusan made history at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, becoming Nigeria’s first-ever gold medalist in the women’s 100m hurdles. Her time of 12.12 seconds was not only a personal best but also a new Championship record.

Amusan’s achievement was all the more impressive given that she beat Kendra Harrison’s 2016 world record by 0.08 seconds, in addition, to making her country Nigeria proud by being Nigeria’s first-ever gold medalist. Tobi Amusan’s story is one of hard work and perseverance paying off and is sure to inspire athletes both in Nigeria and around the world.
According to Tobi Amusan “The goal was to come out and to win this gold. I just did it,” Amusan said. “Honestly, I believe in my abilities, but I was not expecting a world record at these championships.”
Her victory even caught the attention of many renowned athletes including the World’s fastest sprinter Usain Bolt who tweeted “Wow”, while 200m champion and American record holder Noah Lyles tweeted: “12.12 are you kidding me?”
