An African Giant Tony Hansberry II came up with a surgical technique when he was just a freshman at Darnell-Cookman Middle/High School of Medical Arts, in Florida. All the innovations in the world have been made by very intelligent men and women. Africans have impacted on the world immensely in various aspects including film, music, innovation, talent, science, and technology and Tony Hansberry II is one of them.

The technique called the ‘Hansberry Stitch’ was an innovation that not only reduced the risk of complications while performing surgeries, it also reduces the length of time surgeons require to stitch patients up. The technique is mainly used during a hysterectomy to reduce pain and surgery time. The inventor, Tony, was invited to a medical education event by physicians at the University of Florida to teach others how to use his technique. The most awe-inducing fact was that he was only 14 at the time.

Before perfecting his method, Tony reviewed a lot of techniques for several surgeries, taking note of the instruments used. He discovered his idea in 2009 as a student at the Florida school and this method can prove beneficial for less experienced surgeons.

Tony, who has always wanted to be a trauma surgeon, had been advised to enroll for advanced medical classes in his school. As someone who wants to become a widely recognized and respected neurosurgeon, he invented the method because he wanted to help surgeons and their patients.

At the Shands Hospital in Jacksonville where he was studying as a student of the University of Florida’s Center for Simulation Education and Safety Research, Tony came up with the technique and perfected it by practicing using a dummy.

One of the lead medical teachers at the University, Angela Tenbroeck, confirmed that Tony was more knowledgeable than his classmates. He was on the same knowledge level as a freshman medical student.

At 22 years of age, Tony has graduated from the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University where he studied Chemistry. His love for medicine as a tool that can be used to change people’s lives for the better has continued to fuel his dreams of becoming a surgeon.

It should be known that Tony has a twin brother named Tyler who is also a genius. Tyler studied environmental science in order to follow the footsteps of his mentor, Dr. Robert Bullard. He believed in Dr. Bulard’s efforts to facilitate the progress of environmental justice for African-Americans and low-income communities.

Tyler was the recipient of several scholarships from notable organizations, one of which is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. While in school, he was a member of the Green Coalition, a leader at the Student Government Association and a Dean’s list scholar.

As of 2016, Tyler and Tony were both graduates of Florida A&M. Tony plans to study medicine with a specialization in trauma surgery in graduate school. Tyler also wants to study for his Masters degree in environmental policy and management while hoping for a dual doctorate degree in environmental science and law at the University of Miami.
